Today a man that I saw speak last year, whose hand I have shook, who I didn't vote for - but would have - take a podium and say this about the country that I live in:

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works.

I hope he is right, I hope he can fulfill the promise of what he represents, and what he seems to believe.

But in this nation of tired, poor, and laboring people this day has given all of us; not just the ones that can vote; not just the members of this nation, but everyone who has watching and waiting for it over the last 8 years, a gift of something that we have been lacking supplies of and need so much.

Here's to hope, it springs eternal.
