Live... Press?

My name is Gregory Wild-Smith... and I am a LiveJournal User.

There is a stigma associated with LiveJournal in a large portion of the blogosphere. Somehow it is seen as lesser, and shoo'd away. There's a sense that many people would prefer to pretend that it didn't exist. I think in part because they see themselves as serious bloggers, and don't want to be associated with the predominantly teenage girl population of LJ.

Which is silly. Its not like I don't see my fair share of pointless links and kitty pictures in blogs. LiveJournal has something that other blogs don't - a community. Blogging will never directly replace LJ, or vice versa, they are two different audiences. Blogging you can interact with, LJ you can be part of. These are two very different, but also similar user experiences. Often both areas have their own uses. LiveJournal tends to be more useful for its privacy and so its more personal thoughts.

However there is some overlap.

It is in the spirit of this overlap that I am posting this, for this appears on both my LJ and my WordPress powered blog. How? Well I'm using a heaviliy modified version of a plugin by Jason Goldsmith so that, when I want to, I can post up what I post here in my LJ. Useful, don't you think?

link(?) at the end didn't show up. ;)
i have another friend that does this, he has a blog and his entries on it replicate to his lj. it's pretty cool.

much like rss feeds to LJ for other blogs, such as officialgaiman?
17th Feb, 2005 17:52 (UTC)
No, a feed is different.

In this I am posting to my blog and my journal at the same time. A feed is a file on a blog (I have one too) that a feed client reads and see's if there is content.

for example I could not have a feed add content into this journal. What is happening is I am acting like an LJ client (and if I had other ppl's passwords I could post into theirs - its just a matter of adding the journal details like any client).

Yeah, I fixed that. My fault totally ;)

Often both areas have

you lost some parts of your post. since the link to your other journal got deleted, i can't say how well the plugin worked for you.

My fault, all that part was is a link back to the entry on my site.. I forgot to program the bit that filled the link!

So it worked ok, the error was between the keyboard and chair.. or an ID-10-T error ;)

Ha ha! :P
18th Feb, 2005 05:17 (UTC)
how come you have someone elses art site linked on your site but not mine? :(
18th Feb, 2005 07:35 (UTC)
because I've not changed any of the link lists from like... december 2003. I'm probably going to do that over the weekend.

Plus... atm its more of a photo gallery/art scans right? Wasn't sure if you wanted me to link to it right now.
18th Feb, 2005 08:04 (UTC)
....what else would it be? an art site is mainly just scans of stuff...
18th Feb, 2005 17:10 (UTC)
Well yeah, I dunno... wondered if you wanted to wait for the redesign so its a bit more of a portfolio/print selling site.

Linked now tho anyhow ;) Been tweaking a lot of that journal behind the scenes.

....of predominately teenage girls?
19th Feb, 2005 01:28 (UTC)

Not just that. While they are the majority of the users they are more background noise. But even they participate in their own part of the community.

Even if they create their own micro-comunity perving over Orlando Bloom/Geofrey Rush slash fiction.. its more of a group dynamic than can happen with regular blogging.
20th Feb, 2005 22:11 (UTC)
I see what you're saying. I think of LJ as being composed of sub-communities, rather than being one large community. The only thing most LJ users share in common is that they use LJ and the personal nature of their entries.

Btw, are you a fan of Douglas Adam's "Hitchhiker" series? Hollywood is gearing up to release the first book in theatres this summer, and I wanted to know if you're excited about it.
21st Feb, 2005 17:32 (UTC)
excited and worried. Adams did actually write the screenplay before his death, so its written as he wanted it to appear.. plus I like the casting for Arthur...

we'll see tho.

I'm pretty much worried about this and War OF The Worlds... but we'll see with both I guess.
22nd Feb, 2005 23:20 (UTC)
A streamlined version of War of the Worlds was released in theatres in 1996, only it was called Independence Day. I guess Hollywood figures moviegoers won't recall it being more or less the same thing.
22nd Feb, 2005 23:27 (UTC)
I wouldn't say streamlined - I'd say anemic rip-off.

FEAR needs to be present for WotW... thats key to its success. Its a Sci-fi horror of the apocalyptic sort.

ID4 was just popcorn fluff (entertaining, but crap fluff mind you).
22nd Feb, 2005 23:44 (UTC)
By streamlined I meant "modernized" (computerized special effects, impeccably timed one-liners). At least, that's the way ID seemed to me.

When the original was released in the fifties many people were afraid Martians would descend from the skies and enslave or exterminate everyone. It was easier for that type of film to scare an audience then.
20th Feb, 2005 17:50 (UTC)
This is precisely why...
I can't leave LJ entirely. I need what The Others have to offer for my side projects, but I like knowing this place has people who speak to each other and actually care now and again.

Sometimes there is too much drama, and stepping back a bit to work in Typepad will create a buffer from that. I know, though, that I will always have a journal here, too. :)

Your "Cuteness Countdown" is adorable.

Re: This is precisely why...
hehe thank you ;)

Yeah.. LJ is a blogging community, with the emphasis on the latter. Six Apart know this I think, and its something that they cannot, and will not have with Movable Type et al.
