The Joys Of Moderation.

One upon a time, not too long ago, there was a young girl.

We'll call her Erin.

She was an inhabitant of a land full of creativity, curiosity, and inquiry. As such places tend to have, there was a lot of heated debate. Erin was very knowledgable about her world, and helped many people, she also was not afraid of telling the more impertinant citizens exactly where they stood. Eventually Erin was made Queen of this land.

Also in this land there was a young boy.

We'll call him Greg.

Greg was aslo knowledgable, though perhaps not as much as Erin, and he also would tell the ruder denizens exactly what was expected of them. Soon Erin, and the lands Government, made Greg one of the Royals too.

And for a while Greg and Erin were happy. They, and the other royals, dispensed justice and reason to the masses and, for the most part, the masses were happy. Then, with much protest, the government was overthrown... and the masses were upset. Greg and Erin left their land to try and help in other places, but soon they didn't want to come back - they were soon horrified at their once happy land. For it had been invaded by UTTER RETARDS.

*ahem*

I think that's about as far as I can stretch the story theme there. In case you didn't know what on earth I was talking about there - it was Eve-Online, the offical forums to be exact. Erin (the astounding rinnywee) and I were moderators there for far too long. It all went a little pear shaped towards the end though.. when the forums came under "new" managment. Long story.

Anyhow.. why do I bring this up nearly 2 years on? Well forums are the key here. Why? I shall explain:

neko_hime is a forum moderator. I only just discovered she has a LJ, I normally know her as Seraphna on the FuidatNET forums (the hosting companyI am with). Bar some problems when they were bought out a while ago I am resoundingly happy with them. Seraphna is, like I was, an unpaid volunteer working within the community to try and help them, and acts as a go-between for the comunity and the support staff - none of which is official, the forums aren't there for support, but they get used as such. Because she's nice she helps people. She has to lay down the law sometimes (often, in the case of foul mouthed pissed of 16year olds I feel), but she is also human.

She is put in the un-enviable position of having to defend the company she "works" for against people that a) think she is wrong b) have a problem c) don't know things that she knows. This tends to make you appear as a pompus ass. God knows Erin and I were called that a few times. The point is - unless you have a serious problem with a moderator on online forums, or the support staff of a community - PLEASE don't be assholes? I'm sure most of you wouldn't, but its amazing how totally normal rational people suddenly become assholes when things don't go their way.. and then claim "but.. I wasn't falming, I was being sarcastic" or other such bull.

I have a rule online - don't type it if you wouldn't say it in person. Its a good rule, take note of it.
